Ephrata traces its roots back to 1732, when German settler Johann Conrad Beissel and fellow pietists established a semimonastic community known as the Ephrata Cloister. Located along the banks of Cocalico Creek, this community built the striking stone meetinghouse, dormitories, and ink-and-press houses that stand among the earliest surviving structures of colonial Pennsylvania. Over the next decades, Ephrata evolved beyond its religious origins into a thriving agricultural and milling center. Flour mills, breweries, and later rail connections fostered growth, with waves of European immigrants drawn by farmland and economic opportunity. The borough was formally incorporated on August 22, 1891, and by the turn of the century featured public schools, municipal services, and a bustling downtown on Main Street.
